    About the Brand:

In 1948, Ferdinand Gindraux founded the watch company "Ferex SA" in Lugano, and this Swiss company was soon a great success with most of its products being exported to the USA and with more than 5,000,000 watches being produced for the lower end of the market in the late 1960s.

At about this latter time period, Ferex SA merged with "Economic Swiss Time" in Basel, and subsequently this joint partnership itself merged with the SSIH Group which was responsible for Omega and Tissot watches. The founders of Ferex were not sufficiently satisfied by the level of support provided by the SSHI Group and so, in 1974, Ferex was re-established under the "Alfex" name by former founder Ferdinand Gindraux and longtime colleague Alfa Grotxa. Paul Perlmutter, who had been a Ferex representative in the States, also became a partner.

The new Alfex concern had a head start due to previous friendly relations having been built up with clients and customers of Ferex SA, but, on the other hand, the new Alfex brand was emerging at the time of the "quartz crisis". This crisis meant the shifting of the mass production of cheaper (quartz) watches to the Far East, and left Swiss watch companies in a difficult position. Alfex recognised this problem and realised that they would need to take a new approach if they were to survive.

In order to overcome the quartz crisis and the new situation that the watch market found itself in at the end of the 1970s, Alfex took on Hans Saurer, who joined the firm in 1981 and became CEO. Under Saurer, Alfex watches took on a new look and the collection became more design-focused. Indeed, since 1994, the company has used collaborations with famous international designers in the development of new models.
